The African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus), also known as the Jackass Penguin due to its braying call, is a charismatic seabird species endemic to the coasts of southern Africa. Recognizable by its distinctive black-and-white plumage and pink patches of skin around the eyes, this penguin species inhabits coastal islands and mainland colonies where it relies on the rich marine ecosystems of the Benguela and Agulhas currents for foraging. Despite once being abundant, African Penguin populations have plummeted in recent decades, primarily due to human-induced threats such as overfishing, habitat degradation, oil spills, and predation, leading to its classification as endangered.
