The Saint Lucia Amazon (Amazona versicolor), also known as the Saint Lucia parrot, is a vibrant bird endemic to the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. Measuring approximately 42 to 46 centimeters (17 to 18 inches) in length, it exhibits a striking plumage with a cobalt blue forehead, green cheeks, and a red upper breast transitioning to a mottled green and maroon lower breast and belly. This parrot inhabits the island's mountainous interior, favoring tropical moist montane forests at elevations between 500 and 900 meters (1,600 and 3,000 feet). Its diet primarily consists of seeds and fruits from various native plant species. Historically, the Saint Lucia Amazon faced significant threats from habitat loss, hunting, and the pet trade, leading to a dramatic population decline to around 150 individuals in the late 1970s. However, dedicated conservation efforts have facilitated a remarkable recovery, with current estimates indicating a population of approximately 1,150 to 1,500 mature individuals.
