The Apennine Wolf (canis lupis italicus), also knwon as the Italian wolf, is a subspecies of the gray wolf found in the Apennine Mountains. Reaching a population as low as 50 individuals in the 1970s, today the estimated remaining population is around 3,300 mature individuals. The main threats to this species include habitat loss, human persecution, and the decline of natural prey. Conservation efforts focus on protected areas, reducing conflicts with livestock, and promoting coexistence between wolves and local communities.
