The Arapaima is the largest freshwater fish on Earth and is native to the Amazon River Basin in South America. It is considered to be endangered due to overfishing and habitat destruction. The estimated remaining population of Arapaima is difficult to determine accurately, but it is believed to be decreasing. The main threats to the species include illegal fishing for its meat and scales, as well as the construction of dams, which disrupt their natural migratory patterns and breeding habitats.
