The Marco Polo Sheep (Ovis ammon polii) is a subspecies of wild sheep inhabiting Central Asia's rugged and remote mountainous regions. Named after the famous Venetian explorer, Marco Polo, who encountered them during his travels, these majestic creatures are known for their iconic large, spiral horns that can grow up to six feet long. Its estimated remaining population is uncertain but believed to be decreasing. The primary threats to their survival include habitat loss due to human encroachment, illegal poaching for their horns, and competition with domestic livestock for resources.
