The Madagascar Red-Tailed Silverside (Bedotia geayi) is a small, colorful fish endemic to the lowland rivers and streams of eastern Madagascar. Known for its slender, silvery body and distinctive red-tipped tail, this species grows up to 10 cm in length and weighs between 5 and 10 grams. It thrives in slow- to moderately-flowing, clear streams with plenty of vegetation, where it feeds on small insects, crustaceans, and algae. The species faces threats from habitat loss due to deforestation, sedimentation, and pollution, as well as from competition with and predation by invasive species. Climate change poses an additional threat by altering rainfall patterns and reducing water availability. Conservation efforts to protect Madagascar’s freshwater ecosystems and mitigate habitat degradation are essential to preserve this unique silverside fish.
