The Bedotia longianalis is a small, brightly colored fish native to the freshwater streams of Madagascar’s eastern lowland rainforests. Characterized by its elongated body, silvery scales, and red or orange fins, this rainbowfish grows up to 12 cm in length and weighs between 5 and 10 grams. It inhabits slow- to moderately-flowing rivers and streams with dense surrounding vegetation, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates and plant matter. This species is highly sensitive to changes in water quality and flow, making it vulnerable to habitat loss from deforestation, sedimentation, and pollution. Additionally, invasive fish species pose a significant threat through competition and predation. Conservation efforts to protect Madagascar’s rainforest ecosystems and restore river habitats are essential for preserving this unique and colorful species.
