The Northern Ground-Hornbill is a large and striking terrestrial bird that can grow up to 3 feet (1 meter) in height, with a wingspan of about 6 feet (1.8 meters). Adults weigh around 7–9 pounds (3.2–4.1 kg). They have black plumage, large bills, and distinctive facial skin that is red and blue in males and all-blue in females. The Northern Ground-Hornbill is known for its long eyelashes, which are actually modified feathers. This bird is mostly carnivorous, feeding on small mammals, reptiles, insects, and occasionally fruits. It forages on the ground and is known for its slow, deliberate movements. The species nests in tree cavities, cliffs, or abandoned nests of other large birds, and it is known for its slow reproductive rate, producing one chick every 2–3 years. The bird’s deep, booming calls can be heard over long distances and are used for communication within their family groups.
