The Pinta Island tortoise (Chelonoidis abingdonii) was a subspecies of the Galápagos giant tortoises, characterized by a distinctive saddle-backed shell, which allowed for greater neck extension to reach higher vegetation. This adaptation was particularly useful in their arid habitat, where food sources could be sparse. They had long necks and limbs, aiding in foraging. Their diet consisted mainly of cacti, grasses, and other native vegetation. The subspecies was declared extinct following the death of Lonesome George in 2012, who was the last known individual.
