The Yunnan Box Turtle (Cuora yunnanensis) is one of the world’s most critically endangered turtles, with only a few individuals known to exist in captivity and an uncertain status in the wild. This medium-sized turtle, weighing 400–600 grams, is characterized by its domed, dark brown shell and distinctive yellowish head markings. Historically native to lowland forests, wetlands, and streams in Yunnan Province, it feeds on small invertebrates, plants, and fruits. The Yunnan Box Turtle has suffered from extensive over-collection for traditional medicine and the pet trade, as well as habitat destruction due to agricultural expansion. Conservation initiatives to protect any remaining wild populations, prevent illegal collection, and bolster captive breeding programs are essential to prevent the complete extinction of this species.
