The Zapata Rail (Cyanolimnas cerverai) is a small, elusive bird known for its slate-gray plumage, chestnut-colored chest, and distinctive blue-gray face, well-suited for camouflage within dense wetland vegetation. Endemic to the Zapata Swamp of Cuba, this rail reaches approximately 29 cm in length and weighs between 80 and 100 grams. With an estimated population of fewer than 250 individuals, the Zapata Rail is one of the world’s most endangered birds. It faces severe threats from habitat loss due to agricultural development and invasive species that prey on eggs and chicks. Climate change further exacerbates its vulnerability, causing habitat instability in the wetland. Conservation efforts that focus on preserving and restoring the Zapata Swamp, along with predator control, are essential for ensuring the survival of this critically endangered Cuban species.
