The dama gazelle (Nanger dama) is an antelope species in the brink of extinction. Known for its striking appearance and graceful movements, the Dama gazelle once roamed across the Sahara Desert and parts of West Africa. However, habitat loss, hunting, and competition with livestock have driven this species to the brink of extinction, with only a few fragmented populations remaining in isolated pockets of its former range. The primary threats to the dama gazelle include habitat loss, poaching for meat and trophies, and competition with livestock. Political instability and armed conflicts in their range countries also pose challenges to their conservation. Efforts are underway to protect their habitats, combat poaching, and establish captive breeding programs.
