The Egyptian tortoise (Testudo kleinmanni) is a species of tortoise facing extinction native to the deserts of North Africa, particularly Egypt and Libya, although nowadays, it can only be found in Egypt. Also known as Kleinmann's tortoise or the Leith's tortoise, it is recognized for its small size, distinctive shell patterns, and unique habitat preferences. Despite its cultural and ecological significance, the Egyptian tortoise faces severe threats from habitat destruction, illegal collection for the pet trade, and climate change. Conservation efforts are underway to protect remaining populations, restore degraded habitats, and raise awareness about the importance of preserving this iconic reptile.
