The Plains Coquí is a small, terrestrial frog species endemic to the northern coastal areas of Puerto Rico. Adults grow to a size of 0.6–1 inch (15–25 mm) in length. The Plains Coquí is characterized by its yellowish or light brown body, with distinctive black markings along its sides. Unlike other coquí species, this frog does not live in forested areas but rather in open, grassy wetlands near the coast. Its calls are quieter than other species, consisting of a soft "coquí" sound, which is integral to its mating behavior. It is highly dependent on wetland habitats for breeding and shelter, making it vulnerable to habitat destruction and environmental changes.
