Franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei), also known as the La Plata River Dolphin, is an endangered small cetacean that inhabits the coastal waters of Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil. The estimated remaining population is unknown but believed to be decreasing. Habitat degradation, pollution, accidental capture in fishing gear (bycatch), and boat collisions are the main threats. Pollution in particular from agricultural runoff and industrial activities poses a significant threat as they are highly sensitive to water contamination.
