The Western Gerbil (Gerbillus hesperinus) is a small rodent adapted to the arid landscapes of North Africa. Known for its pale, sandy-colored coat and large eyes, this gerbil is perfectly suited to desert living. It has elongated hind limbs, which allow it to hop through loose sands, and a tail almost as long as its body that aids in balance. Weighing between 25 and 40 grams, the Western Gerbil primarily emerges at night to forage on seeds, roots, and insects. It digs shallow burrows to escape the intense daytime heat and retains water efficiently, allowing it to thrive in extreme environments with limited water sources.
