The eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) is the largest living primate, native to the forests and mountains of eastern and central Africa. This species is divided into two subspecies: the mountain gorilla (G. b. beringei), found in the volcanic slopes of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the eastern lowland gorilla or Grauer's gorilla (G. b. graueri), inhabiting the lowland tropical forests of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Eastern gorillas are characterized by their robust build, broad chest, and long arms, with adult males, known as silverbacks, developing a distinctive patch of silver or gray hair on their backs as they mature. They are predominantly herbivorous, feeding on leaves, stems, fruit, and occasionally insects. Living in cohesive social groups led by a dominant silverback, these gorillas exhibit complex social behaviors and communication. Unfortunately, eastern gorillas are critically endangered, facing threats such as habitat destruction, poaching, and disease, with current population estimates indicating fewer than 3,000 individuals remaining in the wild.
