The Urrao Antpitta is a small, secretive bird endemic to the cloud forests of the Colombian Andes, particularly in the Páramo del Sol area. It measures around 17 cm (6.7 inches) in length. The bird is generally brown with lighter, streaked underparts. It has a relatively short tail and long legs, adapted for foraging on the forest floor. The Urrao Antpitta is known for its elusive behavior, rarely being seen as it hides in the dense undergrowth. It primarily feeds on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates, using its strong beak to pick through leaf litter. The species was only recently described in 2010 and is one of the rarest birds in the world. Its highly restricted range and dependence on undisturbed cloud forests make it particularly vulnerable to habitat loss.
