The Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is a large and enigmatic species inhabiting the cold, deep waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. Known for its sluggish pace and remarkable longevity, the Greenland Shark is one of the longest-living vertebrates on Earth. Despite its widespread distribution, relatively little is known about its ecology and population dynamics. The estimated remaining population is uncertain but decreasing. The main threats to this species include bycatch in fisheries, habitat degradation, and climate change. These sharks have slow growth rates and late maturity, making them highly susceptible to population decline due to fishing pressure and changing ocean conditions.
