The Annamite Striped Rabbit is distinguished by its unique appearance, featuring a grayish body adorned with seven dark brown or black stripes running along its back and head. It has a rust-colored rump and a white underbelly. This species closely resembles its relative, the Sumatran Striped Rabbit (Nesolagus netscheri), but differs in certain cranial characteristics and genetic makeup. Discovered relatively recently, in 1996, from specimens found in a Laotian market, the Annamite Striped Rabbit remains one of the most elusive and understudied lagomorphs. Its nocturnal and reclusive behavior, coupled with the dense forest habitat, makes direct observations challenging. The species' diet likely consists of various plant materials, including leaves and stems, although specific dietary habits have not been thoroughly documented.
