The Northern White-cheeked Gibbon is a medium-sized ape known for its distinctive white cheek patches, contrasting with its black coat in males, while females have a lighter tan or golden-buff coloration. Adults measure around 45–65 cm (18–26 inches) in body length, weigh between 5–10 kg (11–22 lbs), and lack a tail, as is typical with apes. These gibbons are highly arboreal, moving primarily through brachiation (swinging from branch to branch), and are known for their loud, elaborate vocalizations used to mark territory. They are primarily frugivorous but also consume leaves, flowers, and insects, contributing to seed dispersal within their forest habitats.
