The Scimitar‑horned Oryx (Oryx dammah) is a large pale antelope native to the arid fringes of North Africa, recognized by its majestic backward‑curving horns (up to ~1.2 m) and white coat with reddish neck markings depending on the season. Historically widespread, it was declared Extinct in the Wild by 2000 due to excessive hunting and habitat degradation. However, robust global captive breeding programs (now ~3,276 individuals in 185 institutions) enabled reintroduction efforts starting in the mid‑1980s across Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, and Chad. Today, there are around 400–600 wild scimitar‑horned oryx thriving again in Chad, and the species has been downlisted to Endangered. Adults weigh between 90–210 kg, live 15–20 years, and are well‑adapted to extreme heat—capable of raising body temperature to avoid sweating and surviving months without water. They live in structured herds, migrate in search of forage, and play key ecological roles in savanna ecosystems. Conservation continues via genetic monitoring, habitat restoration, and expanding secured wild populations across the Sahara–Sahel.
