The Puerto Rican Crested Toad is a medium-sized toad species known for its distinctive upturned snout and bumpy, rough-textured skin. Its coloration ranges from yellowish-brown to olive, and it often has darker spots. Adults typically grow to 2.5–4.5 inches (6.3–11.4 cm) in length. This toad is endemic to Puerto Rico and historically inhabited both dry and coastal forests. It is nocturnal and secretive, spending much of its time hidden in burrows or under leaf litter. The species breeds in temporary rainwater pools formed during heavy rainfall, making it dependent on these seasonal environments for reproduction.
