The Allpahuayo Antbird is a small, insectivorous bird, measuring about 5 inches (13 cm) in length. Males have dark gray to black plumage, while females are more brownish with lighter underparts. This species is endemic to the varillal forest, a type of white-sand forest in the Amazon rainforest near Iquitos, Peru. It primarily forages for insects in the understory, often following army ant swarms to feed on flushed prey. The Allpahuayo Antbird is adapted to the unique conditions of the white-sand forests and is highly dependent on this habitat, making it particularly vulnerable to deforestation and habitat fragmentation.
