The White-eared Pocket Mouse is a small, nocturnal rodent distinguished by pale fur on its ears, which contrasts with its generally tan or gray coat. This tiny mouse typically measures 9–12 cm (3.5–4.7 inches) in body length with a tail of about 6–9 cm (2.4–3.5 inches) and weighs between 5–10 grams (0.18–0.35 oz). Adapted to arid and semi-arid environments, it is primarily seed-eating (granivorous) and uses cheek pouches to store food. The mouse is highly elusive, spending much of its time underground in burrows, especially during the day, to avoid the high temperatures of its desert habitat.
