The Cauliflower Coral (Pocillopora meandrina) is a branching stony coral species that helps build and maintain shallow tropical reef structures throughout the Indo‑Pacific and eastern Pacific regions. Its colonies resemble small upright bushes with intricate, cauliflower‑like branch patterns covered in tiny wart‑like verrucae, and exhibit colors ranging from cream and brown to shades of green or pink depending on light and symbiont conditions. As a hermaphroditic coral, individual polyps contain both male and female reproductive cells, and reproduction occurs by both sexual spawning and asexual fragmentation, the latter allowing detached branch pieces to settle and form new colonies. This coral houses microscopic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within its tissues, which produce nutrients via photosynthesis that feed the coral, while the coral provides shelter and access to sunlight. Pocillopora meandrina plays a crucial ecological role by contributing to reef complexity, providing habitat and shelter for myriad reef fishes and invertebrates, and aiding in calcium carbonate deposition that underpins reef growth. However, like many reef corals today, it faces mounting pressures from rising ocean temperatures, acidification, pollution and physical disturbance, with scientific projections indicating potentially severe population declines by mid‑century, prompting its listing as Endangered.
