The Polar Bear is a large, powerful bear uniquely adapted to life in the Arctic, where sea‑ice and frigid seas define its world. With translucent guard hairs that appear white for camouflage against snow and ice, dense insulating fur beneath, and a thick layer of blubber beneath its skin, the Polar Bear thrives in freezing conditions. Adult males often weigh several hundred kilograms and measure over two meters in length, making them among the largest land carnivores on Earth. They spend much of their lives on drifting sea ice or along ice edges, using those platforms to hunt seals — their main prey — waiting patiently beside breathing‑holes or breaking into dens to ambush them. As apex predators, polar bears face no natural predators, and they rely on the ice not only for hunting but also for traveling and even denning during reproduction. Mothers dig snow dens and give birth to cubs in winter, raising them through the harsh Arctic conditions until they are old enough to fend for themselves. Yet, the survival of polar bears is tightly linked to the presence of sea ice. With accelerating loss of sea ice due to climate change — shrinking ice coverage, shorter ice seasons, and fragmented habitat — polar bears increasingly face longer swims, reduced hunting success, and nutritional stress. The species is estimated to number between about 22,000 and 31,000 individuals worldwide and is classified as Vulnerable. While some subpopulations remain stable or even temporarily benefit...
