The Zapadores Robber Frog (Pristimantis quinquagesimus) is a small, nocturnal frog endemic to the montane cloud forests of Ecuador’s Andes. Measuring only a few centimeters, this frog has a mottled brown and green coloration, which provides excellent camouflage among leaf litter and mossy forest floors. Weighing between 3 and 5 grams, it feeds primarily on small insects and other invertebrates. The Zapadores Robber Frog depends on the high humidity and stable temperatures of cloud forests for survival. However, its limited range and dependence on specific habitat conditions make it vulnerable to deforestation, habitat degradation, and climate change. Conservation efforts to protect the remaining cloud forests in Ecuador are essential for the continued survival of this species.
