The Silky Sifaka (Propithecus candidus) is a magnificent, rare lemur found only in a narrow band of rainforest in northeastern Madagascar. With its striking long, silky white fur (sometimes with silver or grey tinges), reddish‑orange eyes and large size (5‑6 kg adults), it is sometimes called the “ghost of the forest.” It moves through the canopy by powerful vertical clinging and leaping, and when on the ground it bounds in its characteristic bipedal hop. Social groups range from two to nine individuals, often led by females, and display strong social bonds, grooming, play and alloparental care. Seasonally, females typically give birth to a single infant every two years during the rainy season. The diet is varied: mostly young leaves, fruits, seeds and occasionally flowers from more than 70 plant species in its habitat. Sadly, the silky sifaka is among the world’s most critically endangered primates: its small population (fewer than ~250 mature individuals), extremely restricted range, ongoing habitat destruction, hunting pressure and climate vulnerability make its survival precarious. Conservation efforts focus on protecting its remaining rainforest blocks (e.g., Marojejy, Anjanaharibe‑Sud), establishing forest corridors (such as between Makira and Marojejy), tightening hunting enforcement, and engaging local education initiatives.
