The Southern Corroboree Frog (Pseudophryne corroboree) is a diminutive amphibian endemic to Australia's Snowy Mountains. Measuring just 2.5 to 3 cm in length and weighing between 2 to 3 grams, it boasts a striking pattern of bright yellow and black longitudinal stripes, a natural warning of its toxic skin secretions. This unique defense mechanism deters most predators, making natural predation rare. However, the species faces critical threats from the chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis), which has decimated populations, and from human-induced habitat disturbances. Climate change exacerbates these challenges by altering the delicate balance of their subalpine wetland habitats. Conservation efforts, including captive breeding and habitat protection, are ongoing to prevent the extinction of this iconic Australian frog.
