The Vanuatu Flying Fox (Pteropus anetianus) is a medium-sized fruit bat with a wingspan of approximately 1 meter and weighing between 300 and 500 grams. It has a dark brown to black fur coat, with a lighter, often reddish-brown collar. This species is primarily frugivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits, nectar, and flowers, which also makes it an important pollinator and seed disperser within its ecosystem. Endemic to the islands of Vanuatu, the Vanuatu Flying Fox roosts in large colonies in forested areas. However, the species faces significant threats from hunting for bushmeat and habitat loss due to deforestation. Additionally, climate change increases the frequency and severity of cyclones that damage essential roosting and feeding habitats, further threatening this unique island bat. Conservation measures are needed to address hunting pressures and protect its natural habitats to ensure the species’ survival.
