The Annamite Crested Argus (Rheinardia ocellata) is a large, elusive pheasant with a spectacular appearance and a haunting call. Males are especially striking, with extremely long tails—reaching up to 1.7 meters—decorated with elaborate ocelli (eye-like patterns), and a wispy crest on their head. The species inhabits the rugged tropical forests of the Annamite Mountains in Laos and Vietnam, where it forages on the forest floor for seeds, insects, and small invertebrates. Shy and difficult to detect, the argus is highly vulnerable to hunting due to its striking plumage and large size, and ongoing habitat degradation threatens the remaining fragmented populations. Once more widespread, it has now disappeared from many areas and is listed as Endangered, with urgent need for habitat protection and hunting restrictions to prevent its extinction.
