The Giant Ground Pangolin (Smutsia gigantea) is the largest of the eight pangolin species, and one of the most elusive mammals in Africa. Distinguished by its large, overlapping keratin scales that form a natural armor, this solitary, nocturnal creature possesses a long, narrow head and a highly specialized, sticky tongue that can extend over 60 cm (24 in) to extract ants and termites from nests. Adult individuals can weigh between 30 and 40 kilograms (66–88 lbs), and when fully extended, may reach nearly 1.8 meters (6 ft) in length, including their thick tail which aids in balance and movement.
Native to dense tropical forests, swamp edges, and wooded savannas of Central and West Africa, the giant pangolin is adapted to a terrestrial lifestyle. Unlike arboreal pangolin species, it forages primarily on the ground, using powerful claws to dig into termite mounds and ant colonies. Its strong limbs and prehensile tail assist in navigating uneven forest terrain and burrowing for shelter. Though capable of swimming, it prefers moist forested habitats close to water, which support rich insect populations.
Despite its armor-like appearance, the giant pangolin is gentle and non-aggressive, relying on its ability to roll into a tight ball to protect itself from predators such as leopards or hyenas. Its reproductive habits remain poorly understood, though like other pangolins, it is believed to be a s...
