The Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association (RWCA) is a Rwandan nonprofit conservation organization founded in 2015 by veterinarian and conservationist Dr. Olivier Nsengimana. Its mission is to protect threatened wildlife and ecosystems in Rwanda using community-driven conservation solutions, scientific research, and environmental education. The organization’s flagship initiative focuses on saving the endangered Grey Crowned Crane, which had declined due to illegal trade and habitat destruction. Through projects such as Umusambi Village, wetland restoration, anti-wildlife-trafficking initiatives, species monitoring, and youth environmental education programs, RWCA works closely with local communities and government partners to restore habitats and safeguard endangered species across Rwanda.

The Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus), also known as the African Grey Parrot or Congo Grey Parrot, is a medium‑sized, predominantly grey parrot with striking red tail feathers and a dark bill. Juveniles have darker eyes that lighten to yellow in adults. Capable of remarkable vocal mimicry and cognitive complexity, they are among the most intelligent bird species known. They reach sexual maturity around 3–5 years of age, breed in tree cavities, and lay 3–5 eggs per clutch with an incubation period of ~30 days. Both parents care for the young until fledging (~12 weeks) and beyond.Due to intense pressure from the international pet trade and habitat destruction, the grey parrot faces steep population declines across much of its range and is currently classified as Endangered. Conservation efforts include trade regulation (CITES Appendix I), habitat protection, law enforcement, captive breeding, and field monitoring by organizations such as the World Parrot Trust.

The grey crowned crane is a striking bird, approximately 1 meter (3.3 feet) tall, with a wingspan of about 2 meters (6.6 feet). It features a grey body, white wings with feathers ranging from white to brown to gold, and a distinctive crown of stiff golden feathers atop its head. The face has white cheeks with a bright red inflatable throat pouch, and the legs are long and black, adapted for wading through grasses. Unlike other crane species, it possesses a long hind toe, enabling it to roost in trees. Grey crowned cranes are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of plant and animal matter, including seeds, insects, small vertebrates, and crops. They are known for their elaborate courtship dances involving bows, jumps, and calls. Monogamous pairs build nests in wetlands, laying 2–5 eggs per clutch. Chicks are precocial, able to run shortly after hatching, and fledge within 56–100 days.
