<p>Tortoise Group, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has been dedicated to the education and advocacy for the protection and well-being of the desert tortoise since 1982. Our organization offers a range of services, including the legal adoption of desert tortoises in Nevada and citizen science volunteer opportunities to support wild populations and their natural habitats. We provide consultation visits to homes and institutions, offering recommendations for creating suitable backyard tortoise habitats, and distribute printed and online materials on the care of pet tortoises and related topics. From March through October, we host six general meeting programs featuring guest speakers and offer speakers for school classes and adult and youth groups. Additionally, we provide personalized answers to inquiries about pet and wild desert tortoises, conduct four wellness clinics in Las Vegas for pet desert tortoises, and offer a biology internship program.</p>

To address these challenges, Nevada has implemented policies and programs to protect its environment and biodiversity. The state has established several protected areas, such as Great Basin National Park and the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, to conserve critical ecosystems and provide habitat for endangered species.

<p>The Mojave Desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is a reptile species endemic to the Mojave Desert of North America that is facing extinction. &nbsp;It is known for its dome-shaped, brown-to-tan carapace and elephant-like, sturdy limbs. Adults typically reach 10–14 inches (25–35 cm) in length and weigh between 8 and 15 pounds (3.6–6.8 kg). The tortoise spends the majority of its life underground in burrows to escape the extreme desert temperatures. It feeds on native grasses, wildflowers, and cacti. The exact remaining population is uncertain, but it is believed to be severely fragmented and decreasing. The primary threats to the Mojave Desert tortoise include habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation due to urbanization, off-road vehicle use, renewable energy development, and invasive species. Disease outbreaks, predation, and climate change also pose challenges to their conservation.</p>
